For Father's Day, I wanted to take advantage of the lovely peaches that have started to appear and originally planned to make a cobbler for dessert. After consulting with the hubby, we decided to switch to this cake, which I made as written last year, but this time I couldn't leave well enough alone. And I'm glad I didn't because this version is even better. I mashed up two recipes with some tweaks here and there, and the result is a delicious buckle that's a wonderful (and easier) alternative to cobbler.
Peach Streusel Buckle
Adapted from Joy the Baker and King Arthur Flour
9 servings
For the streusel:
4 tablespoons butter, cut into 1/2" chunks
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
pinch of kosher salt
For the cake:
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
3/4 cup milk (I used whole, but the original recipe says low-fat milk will work fine.)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups peeled, sliced peaches (about 3 peaches)
1. Combine all of the streusel ingredients in a small bowl and mix with your fingers or a fork until it's crumbly. Set aside. (If your kitchen is warm like mine, it's a good idea to put it in the refrigerator until you need it.)
2. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
3. To make the cake, melt the butter in a medium sauce pan over medium heat. It will melt, then foam, then turn clear golden, and finally start to turn brown and smell nutty. Stir frequently, scraping up any bits from the bottom as you do. Don’t take your eyes off the pot as it can burn very quickly. Once it is deeply fragrant and almost nut-brown in color, remove the pan from the heat and carefully pour the butter into an 8-inch or 9-inch square baking dish.
4. In a medium bowl, stir together the sugar, flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Add the milk and vanilla and stir.
5. Pour the batter into the baking pan on top of the melted butter. DO NOT STIR! (I know it will look crazy, and you'll think this can't possibly be right, but it is. Trust me.) The batter does need to be perfectly even, but try to distribute it throughout the dish. Without mixing, arrange the fruit evenly over the top of the batter, then sprinkle with the streusel.
6. Bake for 50 minutes to 1 hour (mine took 55 minutes), until the top turns golden brown. Serve warm or room temperature. It's delicious on its own, but why miss this opportunity to add some slightly sweetened whipped cream or vanilla ice cream? Enjoy!

Cotton + Steel mini quilt swap
Several months ago, I signed up for the Cotton + Steel mini quilt swap on Instagram, and now that my partner has received her package, I can finally do the full reveal. (General note: We've had a ton of rainy, cloudy days lately, so it was really hard to get some decent photos of this before sending it off. It's much brighter in person.)
For the backing, I used some bigger pieces of prints from the front (ones from her favorite designers) and included one of my labels in the binding. I used a navy C+S print with teal pin dots for the binding, which sets off the low volume on the front nicely.
My partner said she loved low volume, paper piecing, and geometric shapes, and her favorite C+S designers were Alexia Abegg and Sarah Watts. I debated on a design for a long time but was happy when I remembered the Adorn mini quilt pattern in Simply Retro, which seemed like the perfect fit.
I quilted it using cream thread in a diagonal crosshatch pattern with straight lines about 1/4" to the side of each seam. I love the little hexagons they make when they intersect. For the backing, I used some bigger pieces of prints from the front (ones from her favorite designers) and included one of my labels in the binding. For the extras, I threw in some C+S scraps, a journal, twine, washi tape, a handmade card, and the zip pouch I revealed last week.

WIP Wednesday: Bees and skirts
It seems WIP Wednesday is just about all the blogging I have time for lately. Oh, well. It just means more time for sewing and an easier round-up post for you. This was another fun week -- I made myself a skirt!
I always have grand plans to sew clothing for myself, and then those projects get endlessly delayed, but I was determined to make myself a light chambray skirt for the summer, and this time, I actually did it. I used a lovely Robert Kaufman chambray and Noodlehead's vintage-inspired skirt tutorial, which worked out perfectly. After reading some of the comments on the tutorial, I ended up using 1.5 times my waist measurement instead of the 2 times she suggests, and I'm so glad I did. Two times would have added way too much bulk for me, and this amount of gathering was just right. I love it!
I also finished my June bee blocks for the do.Good Stitches Emerge Circle. This is our first month as a new do.Good Stitches circle, and it's so fun to finally be in a bee! Kelly asked for two blocks using the Bright Birch Trees pattern from Crazy Mom Quilts. The backgrounds were supposed to be blue, green, or gray, and the "trees" are made of scraps in "manly" colors. I definitely don't have a shortage of those colors in my stash. :) Hope she likes these!
Finally, I started on the new perfect quilted tote I'm making for an STLMQG charity project. The outside pieces are all marked and ready for some quilting, and I'll be using scraps in various pinks and aquas (basket on the right below). I am ready for a project like this!
The neverending (and usually growing) to do list:

WIP Wednesday: Lots of littles
Welcome
back! I've had a really productive week, which always feels nice. First up, I finished my mini for the IG Cotton + Steel mini quilt swap. I need to get some proper pics to do a full post on this one, but I'm so happy with how it turned out and can't wait to send it off.
I also finished this perfect zip pouch as a little bonus goodie for my partner. This was the first time I used the curved version of this pouch, and it worked out great. Such a good pattern.
I also finished up a new doll quilt using a slightly modified version of my Covered in Stripes doll quilt tutorial and a large version of the open-wide zippered pouch, which will both be headed to a friend who's expecting a new little one. Her first two daughters were the recipients of the original Covered in Stripes doll quilts, so it was only appropriate that the new little lady get one, too. I love those little bikes! The extra-large pouch is for mama. :)
Then, I got to work on several new projects from my crazy list (see below). I'm actually making a skirt for myself! The pieces are cut and everything, and I'm planning to make myself finish this before moving on to anything else. I'm using some Robert Kaufman chambray and Noodlehead's vintage-inspired skirt tutorial. Wish me luck!
Finally, I pulled fabrics for a new perfect quilted tote, which I'm making for an STLMQG charity project, and my June bee blocks for the do.Good Stitches Emerge Circle. This is our first month as a new do.Good Stitches circle, and I'm so excited to finally be joining in on a quilting bee. We're doing the Bright Birch pattern from Crazy Mom Quilts.

WIP Wednesday: All the pretties
Welcome back! It's busy, busy, busy around here. In case you didn't catch it yesterday, I finished the Birch Triangle baby quilt! You can see all the pics and info in this post.
After getting the rest of the background fabric I needed, I shifted my focus to finishing up my
mini for the IG Cotton + Steel mini quilt swap.
A few more inches of binding, and this one will be in the win column. I'm so excited to send this one off to my partner soon!
Finally, last night was filled with a bunch of ironing and cutting for a few small projects I need to finish up: a perfect zip pouch for my C+S swap partner, a new doll quilt from my tutorial, and an open-wide zippered pouch for a friend. It'll be nice to wrap up a few little things.
Finally, I couldn't help but play around with the Rhoda Ruth mini charm pack that the amazingly wonderful ladies from my LQS brought back from Quilt Market for me (knowing my obsession with Elizabeth Hartman). I LURVE these fabrics! (Those colors! Foxes!) As soon as I finish up the little projects, these are being turned into a mini just for me so I can stare at them obsessively until the fabrics come out in September.
